Today's Chaotic Environment is Calling for a Transformation in Executive Leadership for Both Private and Public Organizations.
We are fully engaged in a fast-paced, global-technical environment that
is filled with emerging opportunities yet fraught with growing
uncertainties. More than ever, great technical capacity and
intellectual savvy are not sufficient to thrive let alone succeed in
the existing environment. The speed of change, global competition,
the war on terror, climate change and an unsettling economy add up to
one of the most challenging times for organizations aiming to expand
their impact, grow and ability to continuously innovate.
Thankfully, we also find
ourselves in a time when we have a growing awareness of specific
practices that that when applied lead to greater profitability, improved
performance and leadership mastery.
I founded Executive
Skillworks to assist CEOs, senior executives and government leaders to
leverage these best practices and tap the opportunities inherent in our
times. Our primary focus is to stay on top of the latest research and
bring proven best practices to our clients so that they can take full
advantage of the opportunities and effectively mitigate the key
challenges our clients, constituants and stakeholders are facing.
Leaders are Compensated to Generate Breakthrough Results - Not to Maintain the Status Quo.
Hopefully, we are ending a time in our history when CEOs and other senior executives will be compensated on a grand scale when they fall far short of expectations or worse yet watch over a collapse in their business. With the meltdown of key financial services companies and the automotive industry we see the cost to the lack of visionary leadership, integrity, and innovation. Today many other organizations have lost touch with the needs of the market place and are finding themselves in dire situations. Still others who are not on the edge of collapse sense a need to step back and regroup.
Public sector executives are also being asked to become more results-focused, strategic, collaborative and transparent. These are massive changes for large government bureaucracies and again it demands strong leadershp from the top.
Yet, there are also organizations who remain at the top of their game. Examples of such organizations include Apple, Southwest Airlines, FedEx, NASA, NSA, Starbucks, GE, Proctor & Gamble, Google, The US Army as well as the Big Four Accounting Firms. Certainly, these organizations are being impacted by the challenges of our time yet they are maintaining their impact. The question is why do these organizations continue to succeed and what can we learn from them? For the most part they:

- Maintain a focus on their core mission and orient their priorities to fulfill it.
- Build deep relationships with their customers, constituents and stakeholders.
- Engage strong leadership and focus on enhancing the impact of their leaders.

- Generate a great work environment that brings out the best in their employees/staff.

I have
spent the last 25 years in business watching the pace of change
escalate. During this time I have been an avid student of business,
leadership and change management practices, as well as the psychology
of personal success and fulfillment (David's profile).
I
